My Approach

In nerdy therapy language, we call it our "theoretical orientation." Aka: what is the lens through which we view and conceptualize the client (i.e., the human being) sitting right in front of us? How do we make sense of the symptoms (i.e., the pain and dis-ease) they bring in with them? And what sort of change must occur in order to bring forth a sense of healing and wholeness?

Rather than subscribe to one particular theoretical orientation, I utilize an eclectic approach that recognizes that the best clinical framework is often pieced together by little nuggets of wisdom gleaned from a variety of conceptual understandings.

That being said, some theories I find more helpful than others in their attempts at capturing both the plight and the path forward. These include:

  • Attachment Theory

  • Polyvagal Theory

  • Affective Neuroscience

  • Interpersonal Neurobiology

  • Systems Theory (including Internal Family Systems Model)

  • Adaptive Information Processing Theory (the framework behind EMDR)

Each of these theoretical understandings inform how I seek to collaborate with my clients in their healing journey. If you want to learn more about how this shows up in the nitty-gritty of our therapy sessions, click here to schedule a consultation and to learn if my approach fits what you're looking for.
